Walking into Trek World 2010 was like walking into the ultimate candy store. You could almost say "eye" candy store except that this stuff rides as great as it looks. Dealers not only got to see the 2010 bikes...we also got to ride them.

Brad Cooley Joins the 29'er Gang

After hearing Tommy and Brent go on and on about their new rides, Brad finally gave in and demo-ed a 29'er. He liked the extra speed and chose a shiny new Fisher Hi Fi Pro 29'er.

The great thing about buying a 29'er from Paceline is that Tommy does this silly dance and then Amy gives you a big box of stuff that came with the bike and helps you find the toy surprise.

Brad says we'll sell a lot more 29'ers when he's done kicking all his riding buddies butts on his fast new bike.

SPRING WEATHER BRINGS OUT LOTS OF RIDERS

We saw lots of folks we haven't seen for a while on last Saturday's rides. The beautiful weather helped to provide a great ride and everybody came back pink and smiling. (Aw, who needs sunscreen in March?)

Later in the day we had several people come by to show us their body art. Cyclists sure do get some wierd sunburn marks at the start of the season.

Maybe next time (not this weekend for sure) we'll ask people to send their post ride pictures to us and we'll put them on the blog. Craziest cyclist tan wins a bottle of sunsceen.

Park Tool School

Monday night, the 9th was our first Park Tool Class of 2009. It went really well and all the students learned how to do a Full Tune Up on their bikes. Steve and I showed the class how to change a tire/tube, adjust the front and rear derailleurs, brakes, headset, and how to install a chain.

So how many of you out there need a tune up on your bike? If you do, why not spend the same amount, $60, and learn how to do it yourself. Along with the instruction and hands on work, you also get a 20% discount on any tools you might need or want to add to your collection.

Curtis, Steve, and Cary were in Philadelphia recently for some hands on tech training to learn about cool new products. They also stopped in Bedford PA for some hands on training with Cannondale's Tech Gurus, Steve and Derek.

Members of the brotherhood of professional bike mechanics convened in Philadelphia on January 12 and 13, for the inaugural Park Tool Tech Summit. Over 200 mechanics and shop owners from up and down the eastern seaboard, the Midwest, and as far away as Puerto Rico, Alaska and Nova Scotia came to do some hands on work with many of the trick new products they are seeing on their shop floors and clamped into their work stands. Manufacturers like Hayes, RockShox, Avid, Fox, TruVativ, and, of course, Park Tool, sent its top tech guys to provide instruction, troubleshoot problems and talk with the group about new shocks, forks, brakes, and drivetrains.

"This is a great way for us to talk with the guys on the front lines," said Fox Racing Shox's service supervisor Brian Lindsey. "A lot of times we get things sent back to us that could be repaired in the shop. So not only is it better for the consumer, who will get their repairs done faster, it keeps the revenue in the shops."
That was a sentiment we heard from just about everyone there. "Although the technology behind many of the new parts evolves and changes every year, it's not the kind of stuff that a good wrench can't get his head around with the proper training," said SRAM's David Meadows, there to talk about rebuilding and servicing the new RockShox SID and Pike.
The mechanics we spoke with all agreed the hands-on approach worked well, and helped take a lot of the mystery out of some of the more complicated repairs they see on a weekly basis.
"Fox was a really good session, and the guys were really well versed in the product," said Jason Fenton, the owner of central New Jersey's Halter's Cycles. "After working with their forks and RockShox though, I'd say that RockShox are easier to repair."
The highlight of the sold-out, two-day summit, was the frame repair presentation put on by Park's director of education Calvin Jones. He implored wrenches in each of his sessions to, "be a mechanic," not just a guy who works on bikes. "You look at problems and ask, 'why did this happen and how can I fix it?'" said Jones. "There is no magical trick to getting good at this. The best mechanics are the people who have turned a thousand limit screws."

Greensboro Epic Trail Ride

Using Greensboro's phenomenal trail system, Brent and Tommy led a group of cyclists on a 50+ mile mountain bike ride. Although a few of the miles were on road most of the ride was actually on the dirt.

Look at the tired but happy cyclists. Several members of the group stopped to save a group of orphans from a burning bus (that's what they told us) and are not pictured here.

Ooh...a rare find. A gaggle of dirt riders flushed from the woods and traversing the pavement. They look strange out of their natural element don't they?

Size Does Matter

These are not 650c wheels...this is just a big bike. Tony Flores' custom Seven even has custom 200mm crank arms. This bike was built for stiffness but still weighs in at a meager 17.5 lbs. (Think 65cm-ish full titanium frame.)

At 6'5 there are not a lot of off the shelf bike options available and Tony was nervous about buying a bike that he couldn't see and ride before he committed. However, a few parking lot sprints later Tony is a custom bike believer.

Pilot Mountain Ride

This past saturday marked the 14th and a 1/2 annual Pilot Mountain ride. This epic ride was well attended by 30 brave cyclists. The weather was outstanding and everyone made it up the Mountain with minimal pain and suffering. Cameron, our fearless ride leader, did have a bit of trouble as he is really out of shape but everyone else did awesome.

After the ride we had an amazing pizza party with pizza from 4 Sisters Restaurant. All in all it was a great day and we would like to thank everyone for making it out.

Fort Lewis & App. State take home American collegiate titles

Congratulation Alex! Alex is one of the solid performers for ASU.(and one of Paceline's own!)
Fort Lewis College narrowly surpassed host Lees-McRae College to win the Division I team omnium competition at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships last weekend. Even fewer points separated Division II champions Appalachian State University and second-place Colorado School of Mines. The top individual scorers in both endurance and gravity events
were also awarded individual omnium crowns following a weekend of competition hosted by Lees-McRae College in North Carolina.

The Division II team race was even closer with nearby Appalachian State University edging last year's champion, the Colorado School of Mines, 585- 575. Evenly dispersed talent was on display with the top five schools finishing within 100 points.

Enduro Action

Our buddy, Mark Scalise, has a fascinating race history. Someone found this pic! 1979 Tellico Plains, Tennessee. National Enduro Motorcycle Race in the Cherokee National Forest. Mark placed third. He raced from 73 to 81. Won a few, the last year he raced he finished 7th place or better in every race: Mark was a top 10 rider. Enduro's are basically long cross country races, kind of like a cyclecross event. Short races were 80 miles and the longer ones were 125 miles. We're glad Mark is back!

This is a small portion of the 800 Trek Lime bicycles that took part in a 3 mile ride from Monona Terrace to the University of Madison campus in Madison Wisconsin.

Madison is one of the most bicycle friendly places around and this particular downtown street is actually always closed to cars. It is lined with great shops and restaurants. The folks dining on the sidewalks were amazed at the long line of cyclists coming down the road.

The Angels Tri

If you missed the Angels race this past Sunday you missed a great time. Over 500 people participated this year, young and old, men, women, and children all came out for a great cause.If you didn't come out you also missed your chance to see our very own Van Brown out at the race helping me out in the support tent.
Richard Carver was one part of a 3 man team. This is him getting a massage and trying to relax before the race.

Our young Drew also was part of a 3 man team. Drew has been practicing a little bit for the upcoming cross season. From the picture it looks like it paid off. He ran his bike through the grassy transition area and then proceeded remount his bike perfectly. Watch out cross racers Drew's on fire.

We also want to thank Kevin Westwood for coming out. We couldn't have helped all the people we did without you.

Who's the Hottie??

Our good friend Chancy was involved in a little crash on the infamous Thursday night ride this past week. As you can see from the pictures he got pretty banged up. He is ok, no broken bones, just good ol' road rash and some bruising.

Oh yeah, then there's the short term memory loss due to splitting his helmet (which no doubt saved his life). That's what left this crazy bruise on the side of his head. But after a night in the hospital Chancy is doing well and is in good spirits. Get well soon....Hottie!

Triathlons

This past weekend was the first annual Ramblin Rose Women's Triathlon in Winston-Salem presented by Endurance Magazine. It was a great event and went off without a hitch. Over 400 women participated, most of which had never done a triathlon before. The ages ranged from 12 to 65 and experience from beginner to expert.
Drew and I spent the first half of the morning wrenching and pumping up tires getting the ladies prepared for the race and the second half of the morning, along with Matt, sagging the course and helping out where we could. Over all the whole day was a great success. Our very own Susan Smith finished 3rd in her age group. Congratulations Susan.

Oak Ridge to the Blue Ridge Parkway

This past Sunday Bradley Ungarait, Brian Lee and Brent Lester did the old "Challenge" route from Oak Ridge to the BRP. Brad and Brent are training for the Shenandoah 100 taking place over Labor Day weekend. Brian was out seeking his pain threshold riding his second century in two days!

121 miles, ~14000ft of climbing, great fun! Some of the best roads I have ridden on in the Danbury area of NC. From Hanging Rock to VA, the roads were eerily quiet, something I'm not used to in the Triad. Tight, twisty mtn roads and only cars to slow you down on the descents...

Hekman Dominates!

Toshiba-Santo strongman Mark Hekman showed the form he displayed in 2007 by winning Saturday’s fourth annual Iron Hill Twilight Criterium in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Hekman, who held the lead in the 2007 USA CRITS Series until a crash at Downers Grove ended his pursuit of the title, lapped this year’s Iron Hill field with 20 laps remaining in the 60-lap event, run on a 1km course.

“I got away on the 10th lap and just crushed it." Hekman said. "This is a really technical course with the hill on the back side and I thought I was going to die.”

A few days prior to Iron Hill, Hekman switched to a 54-tooth chain ring; he felt the change helped him power away from the competition on a warm, humid Pennsylvania day, leaving the others to fight for the remaining spots on the podium.

With 15 laps to go, Hekman’s teammate, 2007 USA CRITS champ Frank Travieso, made a bid for a cash prime, marked by Time Pro Cycling’s David Guttenplan, and the twosome never looked back. Guttenplan took second with Travieso third.

Riding On The Sun

That's what our Monday night ride was like. At 6:00 it was still 96 degrees and not getting any cooler. Those of you who braved the heat know first hand. Despite the weather we still had a great ride and no one got dehydrated which is easy to do if you're not careful. You can lose 2 or more liters of fluid per hour on a hot day. Make sure you stay hydrated.

Come out Saturday morning at 8:00 and 8:15 for our weekly ride. It's looking to be a little cooler this weekend. Sunny and nice.

Chris Monteleone in Belgium

coveted spot on the U23 National team. This

team is the breeding ground for future Tour

De France Racers. Chris is spending the next

3 months racing in Belgium with the team.

Hey everybody,Just a quick update..

Finally getting settled in here at the U-23 house.

It's a pretty simple set-up - Six bedrooms I think,

four guys to a room, huge kitchen, equally

large dining room. Noel's wife Els, has dinner

ready for us every night at 6. There are two

full time mechanics, and masseur's.... but with

24 guys here, it gets pretty hectic at times...Riding

here is really different, as none of the roads go

in one constant direction. None of the country

roads are visibly marked, so it's super easy to

get lost. It's nothing like America where the

roads are more or less in grids...I race in

GP Des Hauts, Saturday in France.

It's 160km, so that should be fun.

I'm starting to feel better every day..

the first few days were rough.

me so long to email. We're settledin here at last.

My guys are running missions daily out in Baghdad.

I go with them sometimes but have my fair

share of paperwork to do. Itshot as in over

100s already and the bad guys keep lobbing

mortars androckets our direction daily.

Gotta love a war zone.I've been doing a good

deal of working out, inside of course. I run on

the treadmill and do the elliptical 5-6 times a

week and lift 3-4 timesa week. I've gained

a few pounds from the lifting and all the

greatfood they have here in the chow hall.

I wish I could ride but it's abit to dangerous

(not to mention HOT) out there....

There is spinningclass at 6AM but its an ordeal

to get to the place where they do it soI'm not sure

if its doable.It looks like we may actually be

back in DEC sometime. Of course thatmeans

I can do the winter CX series!! =)

On April 10, David Crabtree, Keith Hobson, and Chuck Furr completed a double century in a cold fog on the Outer Banks riding a Lemond Victoire, a Cannondale System Six, and a Klein. Total pedal time, 11 hours 59 minutes. They’re hoping for better weather and 11 hours next year.

Hed Ardennes Test Ride

Hed, the 'value' brand for those of us in perpetual sticker shock over Zipp prices, has a new set of everyday/climbing wheels available,
called Ardennes. Hed imagines these wheels to be the hoops of choice for a hilly late Spring classic - light, strong, and ready to
attack on La Redoute. Though ostensibly replacing their previous 'Ardenne Classic' wheel, the Bastogne, these older wheels for now
remain in production.

The key item that makes the new wheels more/better/faster than the Bastognes is a new rim called C2. This aluminum rim is significantly wider
than normal, which changes the shape of the clincher tire when mounted. According to Hed, this increases the contact patch of the tire
and also reduces the sidewall height, both of which improves handling. Another benefit is an increase in tire volume, which contributes
to a smoother ride. Hed's goal here was to make a typical clincher tire feel like a tubular - a somewhat lofty claim we'll talk more
about below.

I have had a set of Bastogne's on my lengthy wish list for a while, but given the hype about the Ardennes, I had to try those instead. So I scored
a set of demos from Paceline to compare with my normal everyday wheel, the Easton Orion II. I pulled the Orion's off my Seven, but before
mounting the Heds, I first carried both sets over to the scale for a weigh in. Leaving tires and sprockets on the wheels, I found that the
pair of Ardennes shaved four ounces off of the Orions. Hmm, this could be interesting. But most of the weight savings was in the rear, and
since big boys like me need a meaty rear wheel, I was mildly concerned about their stiffness.

Now I was genuinely excited about trying these, but found that the wider C2 rim was definitely going to be fussy about mounting. With the brakes
fully open I still had the force the wheels through the brake pads, and then found the brakes wouldn't fully close without clamping down on
the rim. A brake adjustment was in order, but being the total cycling professional that I am, I just ran them with the levers open. They
stopped ok.

Once on the road, the first thing I noticed was the ride - these hoops were significantly smoother than the Eastons. Being built for
comfort myself, I was hugely impressed. Less palpable, however, was the 'tubular' feel of the ride. Real sew-ups do feel different to me
(though not to everyone), and while these rode nicely, I'm not sure they would have passed a blind test. They did make the tires feel very
progressive when leaning into a corner, and not falling off after a certain point, which is something clinchers are known for.
Because of this, I do think that handling was improved. I certainly felt more confident on them, and that's more than half the battle for me.

For the climbing I did, the reduced weight added a little zip, but didn't tranform the bike like the Bontrager XXX Lite Carbon wheels I
used to have. Strength was not an issue though, as the wheels felt strong and steady throughout the ride.

So what's the verdict? A great everyday wheel, particularly for long rides where plush is a plus. Strong, but not a sprinter wheel. Light,
but not Mt. Ventoux light. But thanks to the wider rim, not a wheel to swap out frequently with others unless you get a kick out of
adjusting brakes. The final kicker? With these, you can pontificate to your friends about the superior ride qualities of tubulars without
needing thirty minutes to change a flat.

first MTB race this weekend. Here are a

Race day was cold but not rainy about 44 deg..
As we started off the line i was 2nd into the
woods ( of about 35 starters 22 in my age group)
and i hung onto the guy's tire in 1st position
for about 1.5 miles when we started up a long
and steady incline where i stated to feel the
infamous leg burn(from not warming up enough,
although i did warm up). After about 6 or 8
people passed me the next mile or so i found
myself getting into a rhythm and keeping a good
steady pace, I did well up until the last creek
crossing where there was a log before the creek
and large rocks behind. As I came across the
log i saw that there was a large gap between
them and i tried to avoid it and almost crashed
but caught a tree to stop my fall but was passed
again by a few people. As i climbed out of the
creek area i stayed up and finished with the 2
other guys. I ended up finishing 14 of 22
not too bad for my first race. 50.57 min.

race with every pro known to man. Geoff Kabush

won, while other insane pros like JHK, Jeramiah Bishop,

Ryan Trebon, and Barry Wicks finished close behind.

What's up?Cross-Country-66thSo the cross country

went kinda ok. I placed 66th out of 92 racers.

The race consisted of 5 laps. The first lap went sour.

Every lap after that I picked one or two riders off every

lap until the fourth lap. Then I was pulledbut not lapped.

Short Track-44thThe short track went well.

I started in a great position and held frailly strong in

the mid to low 30's for some of the race, then slowly

dropped to 44th. I lasted for almost the entire race.

I made it to the lap cards and then I was pulled.

(Its a 20 minute race and then after 20 minutes they

go to3 laps of the course-lap cards) It was pretty crazy,

I was riding with Liam killeen(world cup racer) for a few

minutes and almost wrecked him. I was like wow!!!

Today we are in Sunny and smoggy Fontana, California.
Just about 30 miles east Los Angeles, California.
We started our day pre-riding the race course
with team mate Travis Livermon. The course is a
6 mile loop that takes youacross several urban sections
of trail.(old roads and buildings) It's littered with hills.
You basically ride up and down a mountain. The course also
has several drainage ditches that the riders have to
traverse. The course is overall pretty cool,
lots of sand, climbs and fast descents. Now we are
back at out hotel, just relaxing and prepping our
Cannondale scalpels for tomorrow's race.

on his trusted Raleigh commuter in the

last few years. This bike has been

South, East, West, and North and still going

strong. Chris just rode the New River Trail last

weekend, and will be going up to the Va Creeper

next weekend with the Paceline Crew. Chris

commutes all over town and does his part to be

as environmentally friendly as possible. Chris is

a seasoned mountaineer and hopes to climb Everest

within the next 3 years. Maybe the Raleigh could

make the trek to Tibet with him!

3 Inexpensive Ways to Go Faster In Your Next Triathlon

Here are a few things I learned at the low speed wind tunnel
in San Diego, CA that will gain you precious seconds and even
minutes in your next triathlon or time trial. The best part...
these won't break the bank!

BENTO BOX

Yes, that's right! One of the most non-aero sections of a bike is
the steerer tube with all those spacers. A bento box behind the
spacers acts a makeshift fairing and has much less drag in the
tunnel than just spacers.

HELMET

An Aero helmet can shave minutes off of your time. 85 % of
the resistance we fight on the bike is wind. Of that, 75%
is brought about by our body. The more aero you can make it,
the faster you will be. The aero helmet takes air
and seamlessly sends it across the back and off the
body with the least turbulence possible.
THE AERO HELMET WORKS!!!

REAR MOUNT BOTTLE CAGE

The air behind the saddle is quite turbulent. An aero
rear bottle cage mount helps to settle this down but also
becomes an ideal place store hydration. Keeping bottles
on the down tube only increase your frontal surface area
(unless you have an aero water bottle i.e. the Arundle,
these work really well). The next best place to keep a
bottle is in the front, between the aero bars.

Drew just got a little faster...

2 years ago, young Drew Siegrist started out on our

Saturday morning group rides riding a 30 pound purple

mountain bike. Everyone was amazed because they could

barely keep up with him then. Now at 16, he's one of the fastest

junior racers around. Drew just slapped some more speed

on his Cannondale System Six with the addition of some

HED Stinger 60s. That's the Ultimate crit machine.

Virginia Creeper Round Up: Sat, April 5

Saturday, April 5, seasoned Virginia Creeper Trail Veterans, Officer Bob Callender and Chad Milburn will lead a group ride from Damasscus VA, up the Va Creeper. If you've never ridden the Creeper, then you're missing out. It is one of the most beautiful trails around. It is very smooth and relatively flat the whole way. In early April, the leaves will be budding and the air will be crisp. Even for the seasoned roadies, this will not be a ride anyone will want to miss. The trail is perfect for a MTB bike, a comfort/hybrid, or a cyclocross bike. The ride will be around 34 miles total. The Paceline Van will be going up for the ride. The van can hold up to 12 bikes and 12 people, so sign up quick to catch a ride, otherwise you'll have to follow the van.

Geoff Wood took out the new Ardennes for a few days. The Ardennes
Has a wider rim so there is less "bulb" to the tire. They're clincher
rims but they ride like tubulars. This is what Geoff had to say after
picking up a set for himself:

"I rode the new Hed Ardennes demo wheelset this past weekend and am pretty impressed. They claim to have the same ride quality as a tubular without the "hassle". I'll leave that opinion to you guys who ride tubulars regularly, but as far as clinchers go they are a fabulous ride. Compared to my usual wheels, (Ksyrium SLs' ) or even the Hed Bastognes' on my new R3SL they are light, stick like glue and definitely have less rolling resistance. i'm going to ride them again an would like to hear what others think"

Check out the titanium couplers on Eric Morrison's custom Seven. The bike comes completely apart and fits into a wheeled case that is regulation airline size. Now he can take it on his exotic adventures (that's Eric posing on the Tourmalet on our website).

When Seven sent us the frame dimensions Eric was a little surprised because they were so different from his other bikes. Seven explained that they design their bikes to distribute the rider's weight best for comfort and efficiency. Eric seems to agree...his R3 has had some lonely Saturdays lately but he says he still loves all his bikes.

Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)

First let me apologize for all the typo's in the last post even though I'm pretty
sure this post will be filled with them as well. I'm am still adjusting to Pacific Standard time which should help nicely with adjusting back to Eastern Standard time
tomorrow!!! or maybe not.
Well, Sadly today is our last day with the guys at Cervelo. They have been fantastic.
I cannot express how impressed I have been with this company. Unlike most bicycle
companies who really tend to follow other market trends, Cervelo consistenly sets
the trend to follow. It's evident with every bike they manufacture. It's all about the engineering to make the best possible bike. They cut no corners and are absolutly clear about what they are setting out to do. I have actually been stunned with how simple their approach is and why every other company doesn't do the exact same thing. but enough about that.

Last night we ate at a great restaurant on the PCH call "Vigilucci's" We had a 6 course meal that ended with a very nice Grappa. Now most of us had heard of grappa, but didn't quite know what it was....Tom from Cervelo gave us the low down and we all had a nice "Salute"
Great evening....more than likely the cause for all my typos.
This morning after our last seminars, we rode down the PCH for 2.5 hours. WOW!!!
The Pacific and terrain was beautiful! Drew and I both rode R3 SL's. They were phenomenal. Drew says it was the closest he ever felt to a bike... He loved it.
So now we wait for the Ice storm to pass and hope our flight is not delayed so we
can get home and share all the little bits of info from the week. Thanks again to Cervelo for having us out and taking such good care of us. It's really been a great time!!!. See you all soon!

Sunny Southern California...

Well... maybe not!!! This was the view from our conference room this morning. Rainingand cold. After 2 days in San Diego Drew and I (Cameron) had barely seen the sun. And itlooked as if we wouldn't again. We've spent the better part of 2 days in conference roomshearing valuable info about Cervelo and their bikes.... but no amount of info can compareto actually throwing a leg over the bike. We didn't think it would happen today....but...At just about 2:00 pm the sun started to break through and it was time to ride these bikes we've been hearing so much about. The Pacific breeze was soooo strong. But absolutley beautiful!!!

We had the opportunity to ride two bikes, each for roughly an hour. First, Drew rode a Soloist Carbon and I rode the Soloist Super Light Carbon. After learning what goes into testing these bikes in the wind tunnel, I had some very specific ideas of what I was looking for. From the first mile out of the resort parking lot, I knew I was on the fastest bike I had ever ridden!!!! This ride was incredible. The bike had a life of it's own. It was actually going fster than my body sitting on top of it. The real test came on a 6 mile strech of the PCH with winds constantly over 30 mph. In a paceline we were consistantly holding 27-28 mph going into with wind with what felt like less effort. And the bike was incredibly smooth. So Cal has lots of man holes. The Soloist SL
felt like butter going over them. It descends better than any bike I've ever ridden and the aerodynamics of the frame save at least 15-20 watts. Over a 40k time trial that's almost 5 minutes!!!!!!!! I am a true believer!!!!

Next I rode the R3. While not as aero as the Soloist, when You take this bike up hill,,, there is no equal. Really, this bike climbs like nothing I have ever ridden. I didn't find it performed as well in the wind,,, but up hill...it was RIDICULOUS!!!!!
So... Tomorrow I plan to ride the RS. I am anxious to get back to the shop and really explain all the minute details that go into producing this bike. Cervelo is a pretty unique company and it definitely translates into their bikes. That's all for now.

Cervelo, San Diego, and Wind Tunnels

It only took Drew and I (Cameron) 14 short hours in airports
and planes to get to San Diego. Waking up a little weary and a tad bit jet lagged, the folks at Cervelo started our day off right with a spectacular breakfast spread and a trip to the San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel. Check out their website at http://www.lswt.com/. In the picture above, you see Fabian Cancellara(Team CSC) testing out his fit on his P3C last year here at the SDLSWT before defending his World Championship in the time trial and winning 2 stages of the Tour De France. We were able to meet with and here from the engineers who run this facility. The brief overview of the wind tunnel is this: It's a HUGE concrete circle with a HUGE propeller that circulates air and allows for completey controled while experimenting with aerodynamics. The tunnel was originally built in the 1940's for aviation testing.Every Boeing 727 - 787 plane was tested here. The F16 fighter jet was also developed here. While aviation is still 80% of their testing, 20% is devoted to the sports industry. Cycling and the luge in particular. This wind tunnel is specifically sought after because it yields incrediblly accurate results. Photos were not allowed here because it is a military building and secret things are always going on so I apologize for no personal photos. Most every pro team in the peleton does their testing here. There is a really cool wall with pictures of everyone from Levi Leipheimer to Lance Armstrong. When we asked the tunnel engineers what bike company spent the most time here in the tunnel the overwhelming answer was CERVELO!!! It definitely shows in their product.
We got to stand in the tunnel while they were running tests. It was unbearably cold.
Those guys are incredibly tough to sit there for 2 hours in nothing more than a
skin suit.
After the tunnel, Phil White (founder, owner, and brilliant engineer) talked
about aerodynamics related to bikes. It's incredible to see the owner of a major bike
company go over equations and the basic laws of aerodynamics like he was changing
a tube. It really makes one believe in what the company stands for. He gave some great insight into aero wheels as well. Zipp or HED. They share a patent for their
rims. NOTHING comes even close to these two wheel companies in testing!!!
Well We just checked in at the Pacific Palisades Resort and are headed off to dinner. Tomorrow we will be heading out to the hills of Southern California to test ride some bikes. Take care everyone. I keep you up to date!!!

Tricows Evening with Cervelo

What a great night!!! The Triathlon Club of Winston-Salem Held
Their Feb. Meeting at Paceline Monday night. Chris Morgan from Cervelo
spoke not only about their bikes but also gave great insight into how
a bicycle company operates and what it takes to get from idea to
final product. He proved that Cervelo does things a little differently
than most companies. Chris was great, but there was other fun as well!!!
The indoor 1/2 mile (was 1 mile, but we found that too hard) beach
cruiser time trial was great!!! Check out the shots of young Ned Tobey
and Aubrey Linville trying giving it their all. I'm not sure if they had
proper saddle height set up...
Anyway, lots of cool prizes, good food and drink, and lots of cool bikes
made the evening even more fun. A huge thank you from Paceline to the
Tricows for a wonderful evening.

Paceline has changed water suppliers for both stores.
One reason we changed is because Primo water uses
cups and bottles made from corn. These bottles and cups
are 100% compostable and feel just like plastic.

Carol Herman Rides to Victory!!

field at the Inside out Duathlon in Wilmington, NC
over the weekend. Carol won her age group with
impressive form. She is aiming for the Duathlon
World Championships this year. Carol has made it
to the Worlds in past years but hopes to claim the
total prize this year

"THE THREE HOUR TOUR"

You've all seen the beginning of the television show "Gilligans Island" right?Picturesque morning, sun shining, blue skies, cheerful -willing participants.
-cut to the next scene- boat sloshing, waves rolling, lightning crashing...
then those 4 words.... "a three hour tour"
We've all been there on a bike. What started out as a slow 1 hour ride soon
turns into a 6 hour saga because of one wrong turn while you were eating a powerbar.
Well two of Paceline's finest experienced their own saga
last Sat. on the Virginia Creeper Trail.
Chad Milburn and Bob Callender set off early that morning..say around 10:30 am
with 9 Almond Joys, two bottles of water a piece, and their new Cannondale mtn bikes.
72 miles, 12 hours, 1 bottle of Gatorade, and a Subway sub later, they finally made it back to the car. 8,000 calories burned. Good thing they took lights.

Sirena Lunsford gets some bling!!!
Sirena finished 3rd in last Sunday's
Winter Cross Series Race in Salisbury.
It's Sirena's first podium.
She was new to cyclocrossthis year
and has shown that she is a Phenom!!!!
She finished 6th overall for the Fall series
and is looking forward to next week's race.
Watch out for her and Chancey at the Town
Mountain Hill climb this year!!!!
